Lactice Tower Optimization

Abstract

We have applied the ideas of muscle growth and atrophy to the sizing optimization of truss structures. Our method of trophic integration gradually resizes members to approach an equilibrium target stress. This ensures stress constraints are met, and we can vary this target per-member to meet displacement constraints. This operates during an N-body physical simulation of the structure. A population-based approach is employed using a grid of parameter combinations. We utilize Nvidia’s CUDA architecture for parallel computation of nodes within a structure and structures within a population. With static loads, our numerical results are on-par with recent algorithms (SPX, APOPC, AMGSA) specialized for statically-loaded structures. Our algorithm offers a means of adaptation to complex, dynamic forces, and may be used as an exploratory step in modern search algorithms.
